Science and Medical Applications
Listed below are a few examples of science and medical applications
already implemented. Many of these applications were suggested by
outside parties.
3D Data Examination - Many software
tools exist to build 3D renderings of scientific data. Few
affordable tools exist to actually examine that data in any
flexible manner. Using a 2D mouse to examine 3D data can limit
the perceptual abilities of the analyst by at least an order of
magnitude. Our first customer, from a national research laboratory,
will use the Orb to examine the output from his 3D dynamic model
of coupled fluid and sediment transport. The model uses the
discreet element approach, and simulates thousands of particles
as they are moved about by turbulent and laminar fluid flow.
VTK will be adapted as the software component.
Model Pre-Processing - 3D gridding
is a requirement for most 3D simulations, particularly in the finite
element field. Orbs will be ideal for many applications in grid
generation and modification. An Orb will allow the analyst to play
a far more direct role in the control of mesh density, mesh shape,
and material properties, for example. In the geosciences field,
the Orb will be ideal for placing of faults and development of such
features as synclines and anticlines.
TREEs - Call them what you like: flow
charts, fault trees, cladistics, networks, webs, ort charts, inheritance
diagrams, cycle diagrams, and so on. All share the characteristics
that nodes and their interconnections mean something. Yet, many
of these diagrams become overly complicated and difficult to decipher
when forced to a 2D plane for representation. There is no compelling
reason anymore to limit these TREEs to 2D. Using Orbs, analysts
and students can easily examine (and build) 3D TREEs. It is anticipated
that comprehension of data presented in this manner will be easier
in many cases than the status quo.
Molecule Docking - Orbs are possibly
the best tool for orientating and positioning objects in virtual
space, in real time. Docking is but one application.
